Good Fathers, Bad Fathers, and God the Father

Fatherhood is one of the greatest blessings and biggest responsibilities that God gives a man.

Some dads reading this are thriving. Some are tired. Some feel like they’re killing it, while others quietly wonder if they’re getting anything right. Some had incredible fathers who modeled faithfulness and strength. Others grew up with deep wounds from absent, harsh, or disengaged dads.

No matter your story, this month we want to celebrate fathers across the CrossPoint family and encourage you to keep going.

To the dads who are showing up: thank you. Thank you for working hard. Thank you for fixing things no one else can fix (or at least pretending until YouTube saves the day). Thank you for coaching teams, grilling burgers, teaching life lessons in pickup trucks, or classrooms. Thank you for praying at bedtime, leading a Serve Team or a Grow Group, and loving your family when nobody sees the effort. You matter more than you know.

In a culture where faithful fathers are becoming increasingly rare, your presence makes a difference. About 18.2 million children in America - roughly 1 in 4 - live without a father in the home. Millions more have fathers who are physically present but emotionally absent. Yet children with engaged fathers are significantly more likely to thrive and far less likely to face destructive life outcomes. As pastor Tony Evans said, “A child who does not have a father’s presence misses a father’s influence.”

The Bible reminds us: “The righteous who walks in his integrity – blessed are his children after him!” (Proverbs 20:7). Your kids may not notice every sacrifice right now, but they are paying attention. They’re watching how you treat their Mom. They’re learning what faith looks like from your example, even on days you feel like you’re falling short.

Good dads are not perfect dads. They are surrendered worshippers who love Jesus, compassionate servants who quietly put their family before themselves, and maturing followers who keep growing, even when they get it wrong. They are Kingdom Multipliers - intentionally discipling their children in the everyday moments of life. Teaching, modeling, and pointing them to Jesus through conversations around the table, drives to school, work projects in the garage, and ordinary, everyday interactions. They help create belonging in their homes and fight for togetherness in a world pulling families apart.

And if you didn’t have a good father? Hear this clearly: a bad father does not mean you have to become one. By God’s grace, cycles can be broken. Change is possible.

After all, our ultimate example is not an earthly father – it is God the Father. “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him” (Psalm 103:13). Jesus told a story in Luke 15 about a father with a wayward son. Though his son wandered, the father never stopped loving him. He watched. He waited. And when his son came home, the father ran to him.

Some dads have prodigals. Don’t stop praying. Don’t stop loving. Keep believing God is still working. Others are watching their children follow Jesus faithfully. If that’s you, remember 3 John 1:4: “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”

To every dad – whether you feel like a good dad, a bad dad, or somewhere in between – keep going. Our culture desperately needs godly fathers who love Jesus, lead with integrity, and help raise the next generation of kingdom multipliers.

You do not have to be a perfect father to be a faithful one.

Location Spotlight: CrossPoint Lindsborg

God has been moving and working in CrossPoint Lindsborg, and it has been a joy to witness. One of the greatest joys from my perspective has been seeing God grow the capacity of our leaders. We added three new volunteer staff members who are dedicated to the mission of CrossPoint and committed to equipping our people day in and day out. In addition, a Pastoral Resident joined us this year, a former Bethany College student who has been involved in Lindsborg for four years and is now taking the next step of obedience in ministry. It has been a blessing to see God continue raising up men and women to further His Kingdom.

We also had great participation in our first Training Center class, Handcrafted Calling. Seeing more than twenty people come to be trained and equipped is something that will continue impacting lives for years to come. This has been the season of ministry CrossPoint Lindsborg has experienced: God deepening and strengthening the body. The hunger for Christ has been evident, and the conversations our pastors are having with people have been exciting. Growth has continued as more people live out our mission of ordinary people being changed by Jesus to do extraordinary things.

One way CrossPoint Lindsborg lived out that mission this year was through neighborhood BBQs. We equipped and empowered our people to host BBQs throughout May and June with the goal of engaging neighbors, inviting people into homes and into the church (who’s the church?), and having intentional conversations that invest in our community. We have already seen encouraging fruit and are excited to see that intentionality continue to grow.

Three ways you can partner with us in prayer:

  1. Pray for our staff as we grow that we can become more unified as we lead in Lindsborg.
  2. Pray that our people continue living intentionally.
  3. Pray that we give generously to the Vision Campaign.

From Reading to Relationship

One of the best ways to start reading the bible is to follow a reading plan.

No need to complicate things. Make it simple.

I am thankful that CrossPoint produces a reading plan for us so that when I wake up in the morning, I don’t have to think about what to read. It’s already been determined. And for those of us who have been following reading plans for years, it always seems that the Holy Spirit works through that day’s reading.

For example, let’s pretend that in our reading plan for today, Philippians 4 is on the schedule.

One of the things I always mention to people is to pray before you start reading and ask God to bring to your attention anything that stands out. As you read, underline the verses or the words that God brings to your attention. Think of this as an invitation from God to go deeper into these verses or words that stand out. God is inviting you to know Him through your curiosity.

The next step is to write out these verses. Follow the Reading It Right bible study method that asks four questions:

  1. Summarize (teach)-What is the basic teaching of this passage?

  2. Expose (rebuke)-What does this passage expose in my own life?

  3. Change (correct)-What is one thing I need to change?

  4. Prepare (train)-What will happen to me when I apply this passage?

So if I chose in Philippians 4, verse 13, my Reading it Right bible study might look something like this:

19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Summarize (teach): God knows my needs and has provided for those needs because of who He is.

Expose (rebuke): Is my heart grateful for all the needs that God has given me? Or is it envious of the wants that I lack?

Change (correct): I need to praise God for giving me everything I need. Cultivate a heart of gratefulness and appreciation for the needs I take for granted.

Prepare (train): Joy. Seeing God as my Ultimate Provider of all things takes the burden off my shoulders. Joy in knowing that He knows what I need and He will supply it because of who He is.

And that’s it. That is how we can develop a daily, personal relationship with God. Find a reading plan, pray for an open mind while reading, write out verse(s) or words that stood out to you, answer the four questions from the Reading it Right bible study method, and apply the outcome.

To take it one step further, and make it more personal to you, memorize this verse as it applies to your current situation. Another example:

Fear of not having enough money?

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Fear of being single or alone?

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Fear of your unknown future?

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

To memorize scripture, apply it to your current situation! It is much easier to recall events in my life and the scripture I memorized during those periods than to memorize random scripture that did not apply to me at the time.

May the Lord transform you in your reading plan, your prayer time, your bible study method, and your scripture memorization. Glory to God!
