Searching For Shepherds

Some passages of Scripture just hit home. If you have ever been in a church during a season without a local pastor you have felt this passage:

Matthew 9:35-38; “And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

Here’s the good news. Jesus has a plan. Jesus loves His church. Jesus is raising up leaders. Now, it’s the church’s job to equip the called! CrossPoint has a heart to do just that. We love casting vision of what could be to the ones who don’t see themselves as the “called”. As we search for shepherds to lead across the state of Kansas here are some things CrossPoint does to equip the called.

Pastors Cohort: About a decade ago we started a Pastor’s Class that trains potential pastors in the basics of pastoral ministry. Over 12 months, we invite men from across the state who want to explore pastoral ministry into a cohort that meets monthly. Some of the topics we train on include sermon prep, leading a team, officiating weddings & funerals, administering the Lord’s Supper, planning worship services, and more! These no pressure environments give prospective pastors a chance to ask questions and get hands-on experience as a shepherd. Currently, CrossPoint in Salina, Hays, Sterling, Lindsborg, and Concordia have cohorts meeting.

Pastor Training: For our existing Location Pastors (LPs) we have a plethora of continuing education opportunities. Every 7th week our LPs preach live during weekend worship. Prior to preaching our LPs collaborate on the sermon outline and share ideas. After each preaching opportunity we offer sermon evaluation and feedback. This helps pastors fine tune their preaching skills! More than that, Location Pastors each have a pastoral “coach” for pastoral mentorship, weekly meetings to pray for one another, conferences throughout the year, and other hands-on training opportunities that we provide as needed.

Pastor Longevity: One reason Jesus said the “laborers are few” is because it is hard and exhausting work! The statistics are daunting when it comes to burnout and the amount of shepherds that leave the ministry (for various reasons) each year. We want to change that. Our heart is to serve our pastors and all full-time staff so they can serve others. One way we do this is through Sabbaticals. Of course, we encourage and make room for weekly sabbaths, but we take it a step further. Every 7th week we give our full-time staff the weekend off. That’s right. No responsibilities. No hidden agenda. Just rest. We want our pastors and their families to worship the Lord as followers before they worship Him as leaders. We want our leaders to lead well at home so they can lead well in the church. Sabbaticals are a vital part of pastoral longevity and it keeps our leaders fresh and abiding in Jesus.

Currently, we have pastoral opportunities at CrossPoint Pittsburg and Iola. We also have planting opportunities in Minneapolis and all over Kansas! Is God calling you to the harvest? Don’t underestimate what the Lord will do through one willing heart. We are here to support, equip, and love you as you pursue a life of ministry!

CrossPoint McPherson

Hello CrossPoint! It has been just over six months since the launch of CrossPoint McPherson, and we have already seen God move in such powerful ways. We have been able to see God bring people to salvation, follow Christ in believer’s baptism, and become Everyday Missionaries in the places they live, work, learn, and play. Our Bible studies continue to grow and multiply, our Grow Groups are stepping up and serving together and we have been able to link arms with other God-honoring, Gospel-teaching churches to reach the community of McPherson.

One thing that we would love for you to celebrate with us is how much God is moving on our college campuses. With two colleges in town we knew that there was an opportunity for us to make an impact with these students, but we have been blown away by how receptive these college students have been. These students are asking questions, sharing their faith, and boldly stepping out as believers. While we as a church love to celebrate what is happening within our church walls, God truly is moving in ways much bigger than us.

We would greatly appreciate you praying for us in these three ways: we are asking that God would bless the beginning of our college ministry. We are praying that God would bring forward and raise up leaders within our youth. And lastly, we are praying that God would show us how to properly steward the growth that He has given us in our children’s ministry.

We are constantly reminded how great it is to be a part of this network. Thank you for joining us in prayer, in celebration, and in ministry!

Simple Missional Living for Everybody

Around Thanksgiving, we often think about the family and friends we are thankful for. Praise God for those people! Have you ever thought about the next layer of people in your life? This Thanksgiving, I want to challenge you to think of the people God has placed in your life that have not gained refrigerator rights at your house, but those you are just getting to know or you see everywhere because your paths often cross. They might be neighbors, parents of your children’s friends, or a coworker that God keeps orchestrating conversations with. We all have them in our lives.

Ask your children and spouse who these people are in their lives. Then, start praying for opportunities to get to know them. These opportunities could look like sitting next to them at ball games or intentionally raking leaves in your yard at the time your neighbor comes home, so you get a chance to have a conversation with them. Make this a family rhythm where you pray together for the people on your family list, or your individual list, as you eat breakfast or at bed time. When you engage with them or in prayer matters less than the consistent intentionality. Celebrate together when God provides those opportunities!

Enjoy the chance to get to know someone more. This is going to look different for all of us because God has made each of us unique with different gifts. So as God has designed you, go and use those gifts to care for and be intentional with the people around you. If you love to host, invite families into your home. If you love athletics, go make the most of your bleacher time to have intentional conversations. Or maybe you are like me where you thrive in one-on-one conversations. There are opportunities as you wait to pick up your children or sit through practice. Embrace where you already are and get curious about others' lives and care well for them. 1 Corinthians 12:31 continues talking about spiritual gifts by saying, “And I will show you a still more excellent way.” Chapter 13 says that if any of these gifts are used without love they gain nothing. The key is to do all things in love. Your care for the people on your list will increase as you pray for them, invest time and energy into connecting with them.

With the Christmas season just around the corner, it will feel easier to invite them to join you at church. The step of faith to ask them won’t feel so big if you have already been building that relationship. You cannot control what their answer will be, but you do have the choice to invite them and allow God to work through you. You never know when an intentional conversation or an invitation to church will be the thing that brings them to know the Lord. And when your children and your spouse see you doing this, guess who is going to get braver in their intentional living as well.
